Community Foundation needs your help to identify region’s outstanding teachers

Henrico, Va. Jan. 17, 2019 – Who is the special teacher in your life? The REB Awards for Teaching Excellence provide a tangible, public way to recognize outstanding teachers in Henrico County Public Schools – and give them the means to continue growing. The Community Foundation’s yearly awards identify, recognize and support teaching excellence in the Richmond area. Honorees receive professional development grants of $4,000 to $12,000, given to teachers who have distinguished themselves by their inspiring classroom performance.

Through a nomination process, approximately 15 outstanding teachers are selected each year to receive cash grants to support professional development activities.

Nominations are invited from parents, students, educators and the community at large. Award recipients have earned graduate degrees, climbed mountains, traced their ancestors and met peers from around the world – all to reignite their own passion for learning and to pass it on to their students.

Nominations must be made online. A letter in support of the nomination must be written by another individual and submitted online with the nomination.

Who:The Community Foundation invites nominations from students, parents, colleagues, school staff and administrators (except for the school principal), and the community at large.

When: Nominations and letters of support must be submitted by Feb. 25 at 5 p.m.

How: Nominations must be submitted through the Community Foundation’s website. For detailed instructions, eligibility criteria and a link to the nomination portal, please visit

*A link to the Community Foundation’s nomination portal can be found at, under Hot Topics. For questions regarding nominations, please contact Tracie Weston, director of professional learning and leadership, at 804-652-3769.

Denim Drive

As you are cleaning out closets, if you are discarding any denim items, please save them in for our Denim Drive.  We have already started collecting for the Denim Drive in the spring. As the first place winners last year, we would love to keep this title for the 2018-2019 school year.  Thank you for your help!

PTA Family Movie Night

Please join us for our movie night on Friday, January 11th. We will be watching The Incredibles 2. The doors will open at 6:15 pm, and we will begin with a brief PTA meeting at 6:30 pm. The movie will start following the meeting. For admission, we will be collecting packaged brand-new underwear. You may also bring gently used coats. Both collections will be donated to Johnson Elementary. Make sure to bring blankets and pillows to sit on as we will spread out on the gym floor to watch the movie on the large screen. All children must be accompanied by an adult for this event. This year we will be hosting three mini parent workshops on reading while the movie is playing. This will be a great opportunity to learn about selecting the right books for your child, building comprehension skills at home, and Incorporating reading into your daily life. We hope you are able to join us!
